I remember my uncle’s wedding as a little girl, sitting quietly, watching so intently and taking in every moment of this magical day (I was always a bit of a dreamer). It was my first memorable experience, and introduction, to the wonderful world of weddings.
Watching, as his bride-to-be was dressed, draped, pushed and pulled while mothers, aunties and sisters, struggled, fussed and fought. Then finally, in her shimmering traditional Cambodian wedding gown she was - the first of many outfits for the day! Seeing the rush of excitement as the family went about making sure everything was in its place and as it should be, I was so pleased to be part of such a special day shared with friends, family, and filled with love, laughter and chaos.
What struck me most amongst all of the rushing and racing about, was the moment when his bride-to-be was sitting ever so still in her chair as her skin was smoothed, perfected and well powdered, her cheekbones sculpted and lifted. Then finally, her lips dramatically lined and rouged, (it was the 80’s, so there was nothing soft or subtle about it!) I was mesmerised, and she looked absolutely stunning.
So here I find myself some twenty years later, sharing every girls dream day with always a lovely bride seated before me engaged in nervous chatter, last minute primping and preening, ‘where are my earrings!’, ‘why haven’t these arrived yet?!’, ‘the photographer’s here!’ In the centre of bridal commotion, in my dream job I am calm and it makes me smile.
I became a makeup artist as I was inspired by beautiful creations I saw on TV and film, in glossy magazines, through music, art and on the faces of women and occasionally men, striding the catwalks of city streets, bars and nightclubs. I was intrigued and completely captivated by the use of products, to either enhance features ever so slightly or to completely transform the face. Bobbi Brown, Kevyn Aucoin, Pat McGrath and Dotti are just a few of some amazing Makeup Artists I love.
In the last few years I lived in London and worked for a leading international cosmetic house, using their latest products and techniques. Travelling and working in Europe has been a fantastic source of ideas and inspiration. Little did I know way back at my Uncle’s wedding extravaganza, that today I would be lucky enough not only to be a makeup artist but most definitely, a wedding specialist.
